The legalization of adult-use cannabis is an enormous public policy shift affecting many facets
of society. The regulatory framework outlined in the MRTA will take time to develop and will
require input from communities and stakeholders throughout the state. While there are currently
no stores open to purchase adult-use cannabis, the possession and use of cannabis for adults
21 years of age and older in accordance with the MRTA, is now legal.
If you take medical cannabis, you should talk with your health care provider about
the possible risks and benefits of medical cannabis use during pregnancy.
You can also ask your provider about other medications or treatments which may
have more pregnancy-specific safety data
The packaging is child-resistant and proven to slow down curious young people. Your product
label displays cautionary warnings and key information in case of an emergency.
Keep it away from others. Remember, you cannot smoke or vape cannabis inside a motor vehicle, a private business, a hookah or “cigar bar,” or any place where smoking is not allowed.
Someone who has just started their cannabis journey will not have to consume the same amount as a daily
cannabis consumer. When you consume cannabis regularly, your serving size will gradually need to increase to feel the same effects.
Labels include a QR code that links to the Certificate of Analysis (CoA). A CoA will tell you the results of testing for harmful contaminants as well as which specific cannabinoids are present in a product.
Cannabis edibles may take up to 2 hours to fully take effect, making it easy to eat too much (overconsume). When you eat or drink cannabis products, they can feel several times stronger than cannabis products that are smoked. When THC is broken down through the liver (which happens when you eat or drink cannabis) it affects your body differently – this is why many people feel the effects of edibles more intensely than other forms of cannabis consumption.
It is legal to share cannabis within the possession limits (or give it away) to someone 21 or older. But it is illegal to trade, barter, or “gift” cannabis to someone in exchange for something else. This includes “gifting” cannabis while selling something else (like a t-shirt or a sticker)
On March 31, 2021, New York State legalized adult-use cannabis (also known as marijuana, or
recreational marijuana) by passing the Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA). The legislation
creates a new Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) governed by a Cannabis Control Board
to oversee and implement the law (collectively referred to as the “OCM”). The OCM will issue
licenses and develop regulations outlining how and when business can participate in the new
industry. The OCM will also oversee the State’s existing Medical Marijuana and Cannabinoid Hemp
Programs.
You can impact whether the youth and young adults in your life use cannabis. It’s never too soon to start the conversation. Talk with them early and often to help them understand how underage use of cannabis can impact them. Your support can help them make safer, healthier choices.
